Volunteering Opportunities

Direct Classroom Involvement     School-Wide Activities

Direct Classroom Involvement (Sign-up available in classrooms at Open House and Back-to-School Night):

Room Parent – Provides a connection between the class families and the teacher for purposes of coordinating various activities, particularly class parties and PTA sponsored events. Can solicit others to do as much of the work as you choose and/or share room parent responsibilities. See note below.
Estimated Time Commitment: This job can be as little or as much as the volunteer would like to do. 2-3 hours a month for the school year. Most can be done via e-mail.

Party Coordinators – Responsible for organizing one of the four designated class parties (Fall in October; Holiday in December; Valentines in February (or Pi Day in March for 6th Graders); End of Year in June). See note below.
Estimated Time Commitment: 2-3 hrs on the day of the party Prep Time Outside of Class: 2 hours – includes flyer prep, supply gathering, email coordination of volunteers and contributions

Tuesday Folder Stuffer(s) – Responsible for filling each child’s classroom mailbox/folder with important paper communications every Tuesday at an agreed upon time (most teachers prefer after Noontime). See note below.
Estimated Time Commitment: Weekly or Bi-Weekly with a co-worker Actual job time: Varies from 20 to 40 minutes each week

Scholastic Book Order Coordinator – Scholastic is a wonderful company that allows children to order books that they are interested in reading. Every month each classroom will have flyers sent home from the company to allow the children to order books. The Scholastic Book Coordinator collects book orders from the teacher, tallies each order, makes sure that the money received matches the money required, and distributes the books once they arrive.
Estimated Time Commitment: 2-3 hours

Carnival Booth Coordinator (March) – Determines or helps the class determine the game for the class booth (from a list of suggested games), helps the class make a poster, and recruits and organizes volunteers to set up, work, and break down the booth. See note below.
Estimated Time Commitment: 2 hours of coordination plus optional time to set up the night before, work or break down the day of the Carnival

Carnival Class Basket Coordinator (March) – In support of the PTA, each class is asked to contribute a Theme Basket for the silent auction that is held at the annual Mantua Carnival. The Coordinator determines/helps the class determine the theme for the basket. The Coordinator sends out a flyer asking for donations of items related to the theme or money that he/she then uses to purchase items. The Coordinator then creates the gift basket to turn in to the PTA Silent Auction Coordinator. See note below.
Estimated Time Commitment: 3-6 hours

Teacher Appreciation Luncheon Classroom Volunteer (May) - Every May a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon is held to thank our teachers for all of their hard work. One to two parents are needed to stay in the classroom and conduct an activity while the teacher attends the Luncheon. Most teachers have a simple activity prepared.
Estimated Time Commitment: 2 hours the day of the luncheon

Field Day Helpers (early June) – At the end of the school year, the PE Dept runs a school-wide day full of outdoor activities. Each class is asked to have at least 2-4 parent volunteers during either a morning shift 9:30-12 or an afternoon shift 1-3 pm. Volunteers primarily serve as score keepers and chaperones for the childrens’ safety and accountability. The upper grade students run the games.
Estimated Time Commitment: 2.5 – 3 hours per shift, can share a shift.

Class Yearbook Representative – In order to make sure the yearbook represents as many students and classes as possible, the Class Yearbook Representative is responsible for taking and/or collecting (from other parents or the teacher) 15-25 photos of your class for its yearbook page to be turned in to your Grade Yearbook Representative by the assigned deadline. See note below.
Estimated Time Commitment: 1-2 hours between October and December/January

Take Home Reading (THR)/Bag of Books Coordinator (K-2) – In the K-2 grade levels the Take Home Reading Program is done to enhance children’s reading skills by Parent Volunteers reading directly with each student every day. The goal of the program is to have one parent volunteer per day to read to each of the children in the class. The coordinator is responsible for setting up the schedule for volunteers and soliciting volunteers if necessary to ensure their class is covered each day for THR. Easy to do at home via e-mail.
Estimated Time Commitment: 1 hour per month for email coordination

Take Home Reading Volunteer (K-2) – THR Volunteers are vital to the success of the Take Home Reading Program. THR volunteers come to their child’s classroom and read directly with the children on their designated day. The books are very short, it usually takes about 3-5 minutes per child. Parents can pick once a week or once every other week or whatever their schedule permits. The THM Coordinator will contact you to arrange a convenient time.
Estimated Time Commitment: 1.5 – 2 hours each volunteer day Prep Time: THR Volunteer training is 1 hour at the beginning of the year See note below.

Computer Lab Aides (K-2) – Computer lab is every other week. The Computer Lab Aides assist their child’s class in the computer lab during their designated day of the week. No need to be a Computer Geek to help out – many of the skills that the children are learning are very basic and directions are given at the beginning of each class.
Estimated Time Commitment: 45 – 1 hour every other week (can share). If interested, please find out from your child’s teacher what day and time computer lab is scheduled.

Art Room Aides (K-2) – Every other week, your child’s class will be going to Art. The Art Room Aides are an extra set of hands. They help with things like set-up, clean-up and helping students during a lesson. No need to be a Picasso, just need to help children get more supplies, give lots of praise and help children follow the teacher’s instructions.
Estimated Time Commitment: 45 minutes – 1 hour every other week (can share). If interested, please find out from your child’s teacher what day and time art class is scheduled.

Ancient Cultures Day Coordinator (3rd and 5th Grades) – In the Spring, 3rd and 5th grades each has an Ancient Cultures Day (two separate days). The Class Coordinator helps the teachers organize volunteers, food and supplies (through a meeting and/or flyers and emails) for Ancient Cultures Day.
Estimated Time Commitment:1-3 hours

Colonial Days Coordinator (4th Grade) – In the late Winter/early Spring, 4th graders celebrate what they have been learning with Colonial Day. The Class Coordinator helps the teachers organize volunteers, food and supplies (through a meeting and/or flyers and emails) for Colonial Day.
Estimated Time Commitment: 1-3 hours

Sixth Grade Party Coordinator (6th Grade) – At the end of the school year, the Sixth Grade gets together for Graduation and one big party to celebrate! Each class has its own Party Coordinator to work on the Sixth Grade Party Committee and organize volunteers, activities, and food for the party.
Estimated Time Commitment: 1-3 hours

School-Wide Activities: 2010-11 SIGN UP FORM


Auction Committee (January/February) – The PTA has an online auction each year and needs help with advertising, mailing solicitations, updating data, sending thank you’s, etc.

Book Fair (November) – Help run the Scholastic Book Fair by: unpacking and setting up; helping students shop and create a wish list; helping students find the books from their lists; checking out; keeping inventory; or packing up when the sale is over.

Cafeteria Assistance (Sept/Oct during lunch periods) – Assist the younger grades during lunch time in the first couple months of the school year.

Clinic Aide (training in Fall) – Cover the clinic if the full-time Clinic Aide needs to be out of the school. Requires short training, contact Volunteer Coordinator for dates and times.

Hospitality Committee – Assist with functions such as the Welcome Back Breakfast, Refreshments for PTA Meetings, and the End of the Year Teacher Appreciation Luncheon – planning, purchasing, and/or working the function itself.

Library Shelving Help – Days and times flexible

Lunch Time Book Club Volunteer – Moderate a book club with an assigned group of students once a week during lunch time for a 10-week period.

New Family Sponsor Program – Mantua’s Sponsor Program connects new families with a “sponsor”, someone who has been at the school and can answer questions about .Please check if you would need a sponsor or if you are willing to be a sponsor.

Office Assistance – Assist front office with phone calls, clerical work, making copies, filing, etc.

Recess Assistance – Help to cover the playground during recess on Tuesdays 11:15am-12:45pm.

Secretaries’ Day - Cover front office by answering phones or assisting students, parents, or staff during the Holiday Luncheon (December) or the Secretaries’ Appreciation Luncheon (Spring).

Spring Carnival Planning Committee – Our Spring Carnival is filled with games, prizes, raffles, food and fun! We need parents to help plan and execute the Carnival, held in March.

Yearbook Committee – Help with the collection of photos and creative layout, plus marketing, sales, and distribution of the Mantua Yearbooks.
